This was one of twenty-two identical elements that decorated the cast iron roof posts of the central space of the Eastern Market. Bounded by Bourke, Little Collins and Exhibition (formerly Stephen) Streets, the market was built in 1879 and demolished in 1960 to make way for the Southern Cross Hotel.
