Summary

‘Until the introduction of that admirable invention, the “lift” (which our American cousins delight in spinning out into the long word “elevator”), the upper floors, or flats, of such high blocks could not be reached except at the expenditure of a most fatiguing amount of muscular exercise. For all practical purposes, the lift makes the eighth floor as accessible and as convenient as the first floor is; or even more so, since the visitor has no stairs to climb.’ (Australasian Builder & Contractor’s News, 30 June 1888)
