Ill-fitted Young 2013

Summary

'Ill-fitted Young' is one of a series of sculptural dresses in which a connection has been drawn between human flesh and the paperbark of a melaleuca tree. This natural substrate also references connection to country and directly relates to Georgia MacGuire’s childhood. As the only sister among four brothers, she found dresses were particularly important: 'My mother bought me one "good" dress every year, and it was by far my favourite item of clothing. I think it was the one item of clothing I owned which made me feel like I wasn’t the poor black kid in the street.' Georgia MacGuire is a contemporary Aboriginal artist based in the Central Goldfields, Victoria. For many years she lived in Melbourne. Her artistic practice is strongly connected with her politics and family history.
