Inscriptions

The large oval medallion style pendant comprising central enamelled coat of arms. The applied white and red crest of the City of Melbourne surrounded by a green enamel wreath on a deep blue enamel ground. With the motto:''Vires acquirit eundo'' on a pink enamelled ribbon. Applied gold scroll and white enamel beaded border. Gold applied lettering to the border: ''City of Melbourne Incorporated AD 1842'' The reverse with presentation engraving: ''Presented 9th October 1884 by Edmond Gerald FitzGibbon Barrister at Law. Clerk of Committees from March 1854- 30th June 1856. Thenceforth the Town Clerk''. Surmounted by engraved family crest.

Summary

The chain comprises two rows of oval 18-carat yellow gold medallions, with 43 outer-row medallions and 29 inner-row medallions. Each of the 72 medallions has a central crest of the City of Melbourne in high relief, with applied scroll and bead-style borders.
