Summary

Location: Newquay Promenade inbetween Rakaia Way and Saint Mangos Lane 'Silence' comprises 13 sculptural elements in fibreglass resin, which unfold across an area of 18.5 metres by 12.5 metres outside Arkley Tower. The tallest of the sculptures stands 4.6 metres high. Coated in white acrylic paint, the sensuous, smooth forms that comprise the work suggest an abstracted natural environment, which becomes surreal by night when the sculpture is lit. The work has a quiet presence, invoking contemplation and yet inviting the viewer to walk among the elements and to touch them. The artist says of the work that it is ‘a series of forms arousing to the mind, appealing to memory’. The state government requires that all Docklands developers spend one per cent of their project costs commissioning integrated artworks. 'Silence' was the first significant artwork to be installed at NewQuay.
