Summary

This aerial photograph is part of a collection of maps stored in a wooden cabinet. The series was created by the Melbourne City Council Engineering Services department in the late 1960s. The photographs document the Melbourne City Council municipality, particularly focusing on the areas west, north-west and south of Melbourne CBD. These areas have undergone huge urban transformation in the time since these photographs have been taken.

This photograph captures North Melbourne and Melbourne CBD. Visible are the sheds of Queen Victoria Market (upper right) and Flagstaff Gardens (centre right). The lower half of the photograph captures the industrial areas of Melbourne Yard (lower centre) and Victoria Dock (lower left). Also visible in this area is Festival Hall, where The Beatles performed in 1964.
