Summary

This aerial photograph is part of a collection of maps stored in a wooden cabinet. The series was created by the Melbourne City Council Engineering Services department in the late 1960s. The photographs document the Melbourne City Council municipality, particularly focusing on the areas west, north-west and south of Melbourne CBD. These areas have undergone huge urban transformation in the time since these photographs have been taken.

This photograph captures Carlton, Parkville and North Melbourne. Visible is the University of Melbourne (centre), Melbourne Cemetery and Princess Park (upper centre), the Housing Commission of Victoria's then newly completed Lygon Estate (upper right), Royal Park (upper left) and the Royal Children's Hospital (upper left).
