Summary

In celebration of the opening of the first Parliament of Australia in May 1901, Melbourne was decorated with a series of temporary arches to mark the route of the royal procession between the Royal Exhibition Building and Government House. Standing as an imposing gateway to the city, the Municipal Arch on Princes Bridge was a grand neoclassical arch resembling the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. On the top of the arch are the words: DIEV ET MON DROIT.
