The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra have been performing free outdoor concerts since 1929, these moved permanently to the Sidney Myer Music Bowl in 1959 and have continued to be held there annually ever since. They are an important tradition in Melbourne, providing the public with free access to classical music that previously could only be heard live in a theatre.
This programme is one of over 300 music programmes held in the collection. Dating from the 1920s until the 21st Century, these programmes document performances by the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, The Royal Melbourne Philharmonic Choir, the annual Sun Aria Competition, as well as the performances of visiting soloists and conductors from around the world.
