Summary

The Art and Heritage Collection holds many formal portraits of individuals associated with the founding Melbourne and the machinations of council, including several portraits of former town clerks. This photographic head and bust depicts W.V. McCall, town clerk from 1923 to 1936, in formal attire. McCall was appointed to the role in October 1923, following the retirement of Torrington George Ellery. He had served as deputy town clerk for nine years under Ellery, a man appreciated for his administrative nous, and before that he had attended the municipal business of Flemington and Kensington. Like his predecessor, McCall resigned as the town clerk of Melbourne due to ill health.
