Summary

Andy Mac (Andrew MacDonald) has long been fostering art in the city’s public places. He is not only a creator of street art, but also a curator, and a co-founder and subsequent supremo of the Citylights Projects – an independent arts initiative displaying the work of artists in lightboxes in two key locations in central Melbourne – and a collector of street art. Over a period of 20 years, Andy Mac built up an enviable collection of such art, essentially a history of this dynamic movement in Melbourne. In 2012, Leonard Joel auctioned Mac’s collection, enabling the Art and Heritage Collection to purchase ‘One Way Street’. This collage comprises markings, small works on paper and stickers on two street signs from Hosier Lane, Melbourne’s celebrated site for street art. ‘One Way Street’ is one of a number of works purchased from the collection, including ‘International Cooperation Will Speed Progress’, which you can also find on this website.
