Summary

With the cessation of World War II, in 1945, Melbourne City Council marked the momentous event with the issue of a medallion, struck by Stokes & Sons, to be handed out to Melbourne's schoolchildren. It featured a jugate of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth on the obverse and the city's coat of arms on the reverse, with 'Victory: Europe-Pacific 1945 / City of Melbourne' around the rim. A similar medallion was struck eight years later, in 1953, to commemorate the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II.
