Summary

Kelly Koumalatsos is an Indigenous artist for whom the possum skin has provided a strong sense of connection with her Aboriginal ancestors (Wergaia and Wamba Wamba tribes). Koumalatsos was one of first Indigenous artists to recognise the potential of possum skin as a medium for contemporary expression. The medium is a strong example of how Koori art can mix traditional crafts and designs with contemporary media. For Koumalatsos, possum skin has provided a strong sense of connection with her Aboriginal ancestors. She says: ‘I love working with possum skins and designing motifs for them. The motifs don't necessarily connect to tell a story; however, they are more an examination of design work, based on traditional linear motifs.’ This skin was imported into Victoria, as possums are protected in this state.
