Summary

Born in Germany in 1928, Mark Strizic moved to Australia with his parents in 1951. He took up photography in earnest in the mid-1950s. Over the following decades he worked across architecture, industry and portraiture, and also maintained a photo-based art practice. However, it is his photographs of Melbourne in the 1950s and 1960s for which he is best known. They increasingly have become defining images of the city’s memory of itself. From the fancy end of Collins Street to the polluted Yarra, Strizic photographed the city with an eye that was in equal parts humanist and artist.
