Blue Line, Peter McNeill Stitt, neon, blue light, 1997, north bank
Summary
Location: Flinders Street vicaduct
In 1997, the north bank area of the Yarra was redeveloped. The turning basin was expanded and the newer viaduct became bathed in blue light by night, in an artwork titled 'Blue Line', consisting of 1.4 kilometres of neon tubing.
In 2007, Michael Brindley wrote about the work in Peter McNeill Stitt's obituary in the 'Age': '.Neither cute, literal nor surreal, the elegant simplicity and Las Vegas blue neon of "The Blue Line" on the Flinders Street viaduct gives Melbourne a precedent-setting hue. It combines contemporary design, a layered awareness of history and a profound response to the spirit of the Yarra Turning Basin site ...'
