Summary
This poster documents an anti-nuclear demonstration that took place outside of Parliament House in which members of the Women Under Poverty group spelled out the words "Bread not bombs" using slices of stale bread. The popular slogan 'bread not bombs' was used in protest of the government’s usage of funds for nuclear weapons.
'Jillposters' was a feminist poster group active in Melbourne from 1983-1988. The group name was derived from the common public announcement 'Bill posters will be prosecuted.' Women were at the forefront of political postermaking in Australia in the early 1980s. Posters were an important medium for political and social advocacy and information dissemination. There was significant overlap between peace activism and the Women’s Liberation Movement in the late 1960s and early 1970s. This overlap reached its peak in the 1980s, when feminist ideologies drove extensive peace activism and inspired many women to campaign against nuclear technology.
