Summary

A centrifugal governor regulates the speed of an engine or turbine. The power source is connected to the large wheel on the governor, which rotates the “flyballs”. The centrifugal force of the spinning flyballs pushes the spring upwards as the speed of the motor increases. If the spring rises to a certain point, a lever unlatches to reduce the speed of the engine by some other mechanism – perhaps opening a valve.
