Summary

The mallet was used by HRH the Duke of Edinburgh for the laying of the Melbourne Town Hall foundation stone on 29 November 1867. The following day it was reported that the duke, having given the stone two or three taps with the mallet, declared the stone ‘well and truly laid’.
