Summary

Born in Melbourne, Charles Salis Lloyd (1902–c. 1960) studied at the National Gallery Art School with Bernard Hall, winning the student prize in 1918. The influence of late Australian impressionism is evident in the work of this painter of landscapes, portraits and still lifes. Lloyd here depicts the ‘Paris end’ of Collins Street, viewed from the lofty position of Parliament House. Painted in 1940, this oil shows none of the bleakness associated with wartime, but rather a thriving street life with W-class trams (not so historic at the time) that trundle determinedly along the city thoroughfare.
