Summary

The collection holds two oils by Australian artist Leon Hanson (1918–2011): this painting and ‘View of the Grampians’. Hanson largely executed landscapes in the naturalist style of 19th-century artists, although his works were made in the following century. Both are, however, accomplished examples of timeless, unpeopled landscapes made in rural Victoria.

Painted in 1977, ‘Country Scene – Autumn Light, Dandenongs’ depicts the titular range east of Melbourne in the cooling light that follows the assault of the Australian midday summer sun. While the foreground tones are deep and saturated, the hazy blue hills of the Dandenongs gently rise up from the plains.
