Location: East Melbourne Library, 122 George St East Melbourne
The Melbourne Art Trust acquired 'Father and Son' (1998) in 2025 by renowned Melbourne artist Geoffrey Bartlett. The bronze and steel sculpture has been installed along the front façade of East Melbourne Library.
The collection already holds two public artworks by Bartlett, 'Constellation' (1997) opposite the Casino and produced in collaboration with Bruce Armstrong and 'Aurora' (2005) at Docklands. The Art and Heritage Collection store in Melbourne Town Hall holds two maquettes of Bartlett’s sculptures – 'Aurora' and 'Obelisk'. The public artwork 'Obelisk' (1996) can be viewed atop the Focal Building at the junction of Latrobe, Victoria, and Spring streets.
Born in Melbourne, Bartlett studied at RMIT and later completed a Master of Fine Arts at Columbia University, New York. His career spans over five decades, with major exhibitions at the National Gallery of Victoria and McClelland Sculpture Park. Bartlett’s public commissions appear across Australia and internationally, and his works are held in leading national collections.
