Summary

Slide No. 44 of 44 This slide was donated to the collection along with forty-three slides depicting Melbourne's parks and gardens, (AM 1672679 - 1672721), which were found in a disused storeroom at Burnley Horticultural College in 1975. This slide, however, is unique from the others as rather than parks, gardens, and other expected horticulture subjects, it instead captures the annual Henley Regatta in London. The image captured on the slide appears to have been originally used in the book 'The Queen's Empire', a pictorial book published by Cassell in two volumes between 1897 and 1899 to mark Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee of 1897. Given that they were donated together as one collection of slides, it is possible that this slide was also used to illustrate lectures at the Burnley School of Horticulture during the early 20th Century as the other 43 glass slides certainly were. Alternatively, it is also possible that somehow in the last 100 years the slides have come to be archived together despite very different origins.
