Summary
This aerial photograph is part of a collection of large format images stored in a wooden cabinet. The photographs document the Melbourne City Council municipality, particularly focusing on the areas west, north-west and south of Melbourne CBD. These areas have undergone huge urban transformation in the time since these photographs have been taken.
This photograph captures the Melbourne inner northern suburbs of Princes Hill, Carlton North and Fitzroy North. The northern end of the Melbourne General Cemetery is visible in the lower left-hand corner of the photograph. In the upper left corner is a quarry (between Weston Street and Barkly Street), the former site of a large-scale brickworks, clay pits and tile and brick manufacturing operating for 100 years from the 1860s to the late 1960s. The claypits were filled in, and this area is now occupied by the Barkly Square shopping centre. Along the top of the image runs the old Inner Circle railway line, which used to run between Clifton Hill and Royal Park. The passenger service was cancelled in 1948, following which the line was used exclusively for freight. The line was officially closed in 1981. The old North Carlton station is visible along the line (upper left). This building remains today and is now known as North Carlton Railway Neighbourhood House. Fitzroy Gardens is visible on the right-hand side of the image, including the Brunswick Street Oval (Fitzroy Cricket Ground) (lower right).
