Summary

In 1934–35, Melburnians celebrated the centenary of their city’s establishment. This enthusiasm was an impetus for the City of Melbourne to apply to the College of Arms, London, to formally grant the coat of arms. Rather than amend or update the design, the 1840s symbols of pastoral and nautical prosperity were retained. But to conform with heraldic protocols, a medieval helmet depicted in sharp-nosed profile was inserted between the shield and the kangaroo. Swirling stylised fabric, called mantling, repeating the red and silver colours of the shield, now replaced the earlier sprigs of leaves. After lengthy planning, the application was eventually submitted in 1938. On 26 January of that same year, the 150th anniversary of the arrival of the First Fleet in Port Jackson was celebrated. In response, the first National Day of Mourning was held, organised by Aboriginal groups to highlight the many injustices suffered since European occupation of their lands. It was also the year that women were first allowed to run for Melbourne Council. The Letters Patent for Melbourne’s official grant of arms was presented on 30 January 1940, a quiet event in the midst of World War II. The Council, at its meeting on 9th February, 1843, resolved that the Mayor be instructed to forward to the Secretary of State for the Colonies an impression of the Common Seal for Her Majesty's approval, and to request him "to take the necessary steps for the enrolment of the Town Arms in the Heralds' College." However, for some reason unknown, nothing came of this, and, as mentioned above, it was not until 1940 that Melbourne obtained a grant of arms from the College of Arms.
