Summary

This is a photograph of the Australian boxer Lionel Rose on the balcony of the Melbourne town hall after returning from Japan, where he won the world bantamweight boxing title in Japan. More than 6000 people brought traffic to a standstill in Swanston Street when the champion and his manager, Jack Rennie, arrived for a civic reception. This photo shows Rose with members of his family around him, waving at the crowd. At first he appeared a little overawed, but soon was obviously enjoying it. "I didn't think so many people cared."
