Summary

Jessie Traill (1881-1967) was a pioneering Australian printmaker of the 20th century. This print captures the Melbourne city skyline from Richmond Paddock (now Yarra Park) with the Yarra River visible in the foreground. In doing so, the contemporary, commercially driven city with the sky filled with industrial smog is contrasted against the natural environment. The work is the first Australian cityscape created in print, in a style regarded at the time as consciously modern.
