Moomba, King, Portrait, Barry Crocker, 1976
Summary
Framed colour portrait of 1976 Moomba King, Barry Crocker.
Barry Crocker, born in 1935, was the voice behind the original theme song for the popular TV soap Neighbours. His most notable acting role was opposite Barry Humphries in the title role of Bruce Beresford's The Adventures of Barry McKenzie (1972) and Barry McKenzie Holds His Own (1974), two significant films in Australian cinema history. He also acted in the television show Punishment and in the film Muriel's Wedding. In 1970, he was awarded a Gold Logie. Crocker has the unenviable status of being linked to a piece of Australian vernacular: for to a “barry” derives from the rhyming slang “to have a Barry Crocker”, i.e. a “shocker”. Crooner Barry Crocker was crowned Moomba King in 1976, the first year that the king and queen (Julie Costa) were crowned in a joint ceremony.
