Summary

The stage of the main hall was decorated with an Olympics theme to mark Melbourne hosting the 1956 Olympics Games. For the annual Lord Mayor’s Ball in 1949, when the bid for those games was won, a range of symbols was used to suggest parallels between the historical depth of Australia’s Indigenous cultures and Greece’s antiquity, represented by the Parthenon.
