Summary

Australian artist Patricia Moyle Blake-Lane (1925–2003) practised as a portraitist and landscape painter. This work, with its lofty perspective from above the Parliament Gardens near the top of Bourke Street, looks south-west across treetops and the inner city. Titled 'Transition', it documents the changing city face, as heritage buildings were lost to the office blocks that came to dominate use in the inner-city from the 1960s to 80s; the countless cranes on the skyline symbolise the windfall of this ideological shift for the construction industry. The artist gifted this oil on canvas to Melbourne City Council in 1976, a year after she painted it.
