Summary

Steel treadplate from HMAS Melbourne. Eight fastener holes, raised diagonal check grooved tread, MELBOURNE cast centre, green enamel paint.

The treadplate was from the aircraft carrier, HMAS MELBOURNE II. Subsequent to the Melbourne II’s decommissioning in 1982, one of its four treadplates was presented to Lord Mayor Kevin Chamberlain (1983-84). These brass plates were positioned at the gangway, one a’midships and the other at the quarterdeck. The Officers arrived and departed the ship from the quarterdeck and the sailors used the gangway a’midships. There were two primary gangway locations on the port and starboard sides of the ship. It is not recorded which one of the four was presented to Council.
