Summary
Batteries and battery-powered devices have been the “technology of the future” since the early 20th century. Until the mid-1920s, the City Council’s electricity business operated an accumulator – now called a grid-scale battery – to store excess generated power at off-peak times and release it into the grid during high demand periods. At the same time, the City Engineer’s department operated a fleet of electric service trucks, like many cities around the world. This type of plate battery in a glass case was typically used in a static installation for emergency lighting, power or telephone circuits.
