Summary
Made in 1987, this charcoal on paper cityscape is a study for Craig Gough’s large ‘Yarra Icon’ painting held in the collection of the National Gallery of Victoria and part of his ‘Melbourne’ series. This marvellous study gives central Melbourne the ambience, energy and density of any old world city. Indeed, abstract ideals such as vitality, energy and rhythm, and their formal resolution, partly drive Gough’s practice.
Gough was born in Perth in 1938, but came to Melbourne in 1974 to teach at the Caulfield Institute of Technology, now Monash University. He taught in fine arts for two decades, before dedicating himself full time to his art practice.
