Summary
This flag by Helen Campbell was created as a part of the public art project 'On top of the world: Flags for Melbourne series' that was presented as a part of the 'Melbourne Now' exhibition in 2013-2014. 41 flags designed by artists were displayed on flagpoles across the City of Melbourne and concurrently display in the Great Hall at NGV International. The project was curated by Stewart Russell of Spacecraft Studios.
"The site that I was given to work with was Princess Hill Primary School. One thing that I really noticed at the school was the proliferation of artwork – it’s really creatively oriented. I started collecting images, little areas of colour and pattern and shape from art works I encountered around the school. At the moment there are four hundred and forty-nine pupils so I collected four hundred and forty-nine little sections of colour and shape and decided to use those to work out the design. I started to think about (the design) as more complex idea of the way that communities form that ended up being a series of clusters and shapes – they’re sort of almost like cogs or something that butt up against each other and mingle with each other in the field of the flag." - Helen Johnson, 2013
