Summary

This Louis Porter photograph was exhibited in the 2013 City Gallery exhibition ‘Cluster: exploring the stories and patterns behind Melbourne street names’, curated by Stephen Banham. It shows the intersection of Collins and Queen Streets in the Melbourne suburb of Essendon. In the exhibition Banham noted that “An inspiration for an inner urban experience has given rise to one of the oddest forms of clusters - the 'mini-melbourne' cluster. These feature a gridded network of streets whose names playfully mimic those of the central business district (Flinders, Collins, Bourke etc.)” Other Melbourne suburbs featuring this phenomenon are Bulleen, Mentone, Williamstown and Taylors Hill.
