Framed colour photograph of 1968 Moomba King, Alfred Marks. Alfred Marks (1921–96), a British comedian and stage, television and film actor, was crowned the second Moomba King, in 1968. A Londoner by birth, Marks may have been familiar with the function of ‘popular rulers’ from the Pearly King and Queen tradition, begun by Henry Croft in London’s East End in 1875. He was professionally involved with Harry Seacombe and Peter Sellers, and this comedy work led to the establishment of The Goon Show, although Marks was never one of the acting trio. His own television show, Alfred Marks Time, ran for six years.
